The honest answer is that it depends on one thing more than any other: whether the wall is carrying weight. If it isn't, you're looking at a demolition and patch job that costs less than most people expect. If it is, you're looking at an engineered structural project with a beam, posts, a permit, and inspections, and the price climbs fast.
Here's what both versions actually cost in Marion County in 2026, what makes the number move, and how to tell which one you're dealing with before you sign anything.
These are planning ranges for turnkey work in the Ocala and Marion County market, meaning the wall comes out, the structure is replaced, the mechanicals are handled, and the room is finished back so you can't tell where the wall was. They are not quotes, and they are not averages of completed jobs. Every load path is different.

This is the part that saves people the most money, and it's specific to how homes are built here.
Most homes in Marion County and The Villages built from the 1980s onward are concrete block with an engineered wood truss roof. Those trusses are designed to span from one exterior block wall to the other in a single clear span. When a roof is framed that way, the interior walls underneath aren't holding anything up. They divide rooms and carry drywall, and that's it.
So a homeowner calls us convinced they need a $12,000 structural job, we go into the attic, and the trusses are running the wrong direction to bear on that wall. The job turns into a $3,000 demolition and patch instead.
It doesn't always go that way. Plenty of walls in this housing stock do carry load. The ones that usually do:
Search this question and you'll get numbers in the $1,200 to $2,500 range from the national lead sites. Those numbers aren't fabricated. They're just measuring something different from what you're actually buying.
Those figures price the demolition and the beam. They generally leave out the engineer's stamped drawing, the permit, the temporary shoring, the inspections, the mechanical rerouting, the drywall and ceiling repair, the flooring patch, and the paint. On a real permitted job those items are most of the invoice.
Look at what licensed builders publish instead of what lead sites publish and the picture changes. Builders in higher cost markets post complete-job ranges from around $5,000 up past $20,000. Ocala labor runs cheaper than Nashville or Northern Virginia, which is why our ranges sit lower, but the scope being priced is the same scope.
If someone quotes you $2,000 to take out a wall that's carrying your roof, one of three things is true. They don't know it's load bearing, they're not pulling a permit, or the quote covers demolition only and the rest is coming later as change orders. None of those end well.
The base cost of the beam and the labor to set it is fairly predictable. What moves the total is everything that was living inside that wall, and what has to happen underneath the posts.

Flooring. When a wall comes out you're left with a strip of bare slab where it stood, usually four to six inches wide, running the full length of the opening. If your existing tile or luxury vinyl is still available you patch it in and it disappears. If it's been discontinued, and on a home more than about eight years old it usually has been, you're choosing between a visible seam, a decorative transition strip, or reflooring both rooms. That last option can cost more than the structural work did.
Worth deciding early, because it changes whether this project is a wall removal or a whole-home renovation.
The beam hangs below the ceiling line, wrapped in drywall, and reads as a header across the opening. Cheaper and faster because nothing in the existing ceiling framing has to be cut or reworked. Some people like the look, especially with a wider wrap that echoes a timber detail. Others feel it keeps the rooms visually separated, which defeats the point of opening the wall.
The beam is set up inside the ceiling framing so the ceiling runs flat from one room to the next. It's the look most people picture when they imagine an open concept kitchen. Our advice, if the budget is tight: spend on flush before you spend on finishes. Cabinets can be upgraded in ten years. A dropped beam is permanent without redoing the whole job.
These two photos are the part of the job most homeowners never see, and they're the reason this isn't a handyman project. Before anything is removed, the load has to be picked up and carried temporarily. Then the permanent beam goes in and takes it back.
Start to finish, a straightforward single wall runs about three to five weeks, with most of that being engineering and permit review rather than hammer time. Removing a load-bearing wall is a structural alteration and it requires a permit. Under the Florida Building Code, Section 105.1, a permit is required before you alter or repair a structure. There is no version of this where a licensed contractor skips it.
Unpermitted structural work shows up at resale. A buyer's inspector sees a beam with no permit history, the title company asks questions, and you end up paying for an engineer's letter and a retroactive permit under deadline pressure. It costs more after the fact than it would have cost to do correctly.
Unincorporated Marion County permits through the county's Civic Access portal, with a residential minimum permit fee that scales with project valuation. The cities of Ocala, Belleview, Dunnellon, McIntosh, and Reddick run their own building departments, so a permit for a city of Ocala address goes to the city, not the county. Many addresses with an Ocala mailing address are actually unincorporated, so jurisdiction gets confirmed per address before anything is submitted.
Sumter County permits through its own online system, with Wildwood running a separate city portal. In The Villages, architectural review through the district or community standards is a parallel step that runs alongside the building permit, not instead of it, and interior structural work is usually straightforward there. Lake County does not review inside incorporated cities, so Leesburg and Lady Lake addresses go through their own departments.
Kitchen and bath work has a wide range of people who can do it acceptably. Structural work does not. The failure mode isn't a crooked cabinet, it's a beam that deflects over three years and cracks drywall across the whole house, or an opening that never passes inspection and can't be closed out.
