Your Bathroom Tile Takes More Abuse Than You Think

Bathroom tile gets wet every single day. Sometimes multiple times a day. It handles water, soap, shampoo, cleaning chemicals, dropped bottles, kicked toes, and Florida’s relentless humidity. Cheap tile fails fast. Good tile lasts decades and still looks great.

We replaced tile in an Ocala bathroom last month. The old tile was maybe 15 years old. Grout was cracked and stained. Some tiles had popped loose. Water had gotten under the floor and caused rot. The homeowner thought she just needed cleaning. She needed a complete retile. We removed everything down to the subfloor. Fixed water damage. Installed proper waterproofing. Put down new porcelain tile that looks like natural stone but performs way better. Sealed everything correctly. Now that bathroom will last another 20 years without problems.

That’s the difference between doing it right and doing it cheap. Tile is expensive to install. You don’t want to do it twice.

Florida Legacy Construction has been installing bathroom tile throughout Central Florida since 2008. We’re based in Wildwood, licensed (CBC1268994), and we know exactly what works in Florida’s humid climate. We’ve tiled hundreds of bathrooms across Marion County.

Here’s what you need to know about bathroom tile for your home.

Tile Types That Work in Florida Bathrooms

Porcelain Tile

This is what we install most in Marion County bathrooms. Porcelain is harder and less porous than ceramic. It’s waterproof. Resists staining. Handles Florida humidity without problems. Available in every color, size, pattern, and texture you can imagine.

Large format porcelain (12×24 or bigger) creates modern looks with fewer grout lines. Smaller format creates more traditional looks. Wood-look porcelain gives you wood appearance without wood’s moisture problems.

Cost runs $8 to $20 per square foot installed for quality porcelain. Worth it for performance in wet environments.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic is porcelain’s slightly softer cousin. Still waterproof. Still durable. Slightly more porous than porcelain. Costs a bit less. Works great in bathroom walls. We use it on floors too though porcelain performs better long-term.

Cost runs $6 to $15 per square foot installed. Good choice if budget is tight but you still want real tile.

Natural Stone Tile

Marble, travertine, slate, granite. These are real stone cut from quarries. Every piece looks different. Beautiful and unique. More maintenance required.

Stone must be sealed properly and resealed regularly in Florida bathrooms. Without sealing, moisture gets into the stone and causes staining, etching, and mold growth. Some people love natural stone enough that the maintenance is worth it.

Cost runs $12 to $40+ per square foot installed depending on stone type and quality. Marble is most expensive. Travertine and slate more affordable.

Glass Tile

Used mostly for accent strips or feature walls. Very shiny and reflective. Makes small bathrooms feel bigger. Not practical for entire bathrooms because it shows every water spot.

Works beautifully as accent border or in shower niches. Cost runs $15 to $40 per square foot for material alone. Installation is tedious so labor costs add up.

Mosaic Tile

Small tiles (usually 2 inches or smaller) on mesh backing sheets. Popular for shower floors because small tiles create lots of grout lines for traction. Also used for accent walls or borders.

Cost runs $10 to $25 per square foot installed. Takes longer to install than large format tile because there’s more cutting and fitting.

Choosing Tile Sizes for Different Bathroom Areas

Shower Floors – Small format tile works best. 2×2 inch or smaller. More grout lines mean more traction when wet. Nobody wants a slippery shower floor. We install mostly small hexagon, penny round, or small square tiles on shower floors in Marion County.

Some larger tiles come with molded texture for traction. These work too but small tiles with grout lines provide better slip resistance.

Shower Walls – Bigger tiles work great. 12×24, 12×12, even larger. Fewer grout lines mean less maintenance. Walls don’t need traction like floors do. Large format subway tile is very popular in Central Florida right now. Clean, modern, timeless.

Bathroom Floors – Medium to large format tile performs well. 12×12, 12×24, or larger. Matte finish or slight texture for slip resistance. We don’t recommend glossy tile on bathroom floors. Too slippery when wet.

Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines to clean and maintain. But if your floor has many corners or angles, smaller tiles are easier to fit and cut.

Bathroom Walls – Any size works on walls. Current trend in Ocala is larger tiles. 12×24 laid vertically makes rooms feel taller. Smaller subway tiles create classic looks. Mix of sizes can look great if done intentionally.

Grout Selection and Sealing

Grout is just as important as tile. Bad grout ruins good tile installations. Good grout protects your tile and looks better longer.

Grout Types

Sanded grout goes in joints wider than 1/8 inch. Most tile uses sanded grout. Unsanded grout for joints under 1/8 inch. Usually glass tile or very thin joints.

Epoxy grout costs more but performs better in Florida bathrooms. It’s waterproof. Stain resistant. Doesn’t need sealing. We use epoxy grout on shower floors where water sits. Regular grout on walls is fine if sealed properly.

Grout Color

White grout shows dirt faster but makes tile stand out. Dark grout hides dirt better but can make white tile look busy. Medium gray is most popular in Marion County. Doesn’t show dirt terribly. Works with most tile colors.

Contrasting grout (dark grout with light tile or vice versa) highlights the tile pattern. Matching grout (similar color to tile) creates more seamless look.

Sealing

All non-epoxy grout needs sealing. We seal after grout cures completely. Usually 72 hours after installation. Sealer prevents water and stains from soaking into grout.

Natural stone tile needs sealing too. We seal before grouting and after grouting. In Florida bathrooms, reseal stone annually or as manufacturer recommends.

Porcelain and ceramic tile don’t need sealing. Just the grout between them.

Colors and Patterns for Marion County Bathrooms

White and light gray dominate Marion County bathroom remodels right now. These colors make small bathrooms feel bigger and brighter. They work with any design style. They don’t go out of fashion quickly.

Darker tiles look dramatic in large bathrooms with good lighting. Navy, charcoal, even black work beautifully as accent walls or in spacious showers. Too much dark tile in small bathrooms makes them feel cave-like.

Wood-look tile is extremely popular in Central Florida. Gives you warm wood tones without actual wood’s problems with moisture. Works great for floors. Some people use it on walls too for spa-like feel.

Patterned tiles work best as accents. Full walls of busy patterns overwhelm small spaces. Use patterned tile for feature walls, shower niches, or borders. Keep most tile simple and use pattern strategically.

Mixing different tiles in one bathroom works if done right. Common approach: simple large format tile for most of shower, decorative accent strip at eye level, small mosaic on shower floor. Keeps things interesting without looking chaotic.

Waterproofing Under Your Tile

This might be the most important part of bathroom tile installation. You can’t see it when it’s done. But it’s what prevents water damage, mold, and rotted floors.

We use RedGard or Kerdi waterproofing systems under all bathroom tile. These create continuous waterproof membranes. Water can’t get through to the subfloor or walls.

The waterproofing goes on after setting the substrate but before installing tile. We coat or roll it on floors and walls. Pay special attention to corners, seams, and anywhere water might try to sneak through.

This step costs money. Takes time. But it’s non-negotiable in Florida bathrooms. We’ve torn out too many failed tile jobs from contractors who skipped proper waterproofing. Don’t be one of those homeowners.

What Bathroom Tile Installation Costs in Central Florida

Basic Ceramic Tile: $6 to $12 Per Square Foot Installed

Simple ceramic tile in standard sizes. Minimal design work. Straight lay pattern. Includes basic waterproofing and standard grout. Good functional choice for tight budgets.

Quality Porcelain Tile: $10 to $18 Per Square Foot Installed

This is the most common choice for Marion County bathroom remodels. Quality porcelain in popular sizes and colors. Proper waterproofing. Good grout. Sealed correctly. The tile that lasts 20+ years without problems.

Natural Stone or High-End Tile: $15 to $30+ Per Square Foot Installed

Marble, travertine, premium porcelain, extensive design work, multiple tile types combined. Epoxy grout. Perfect installation. This is the luxury level. Costs more but looks amazing.

What Affects Cost

Bathroom size matters. Tiling a small 5×8 bathroom costs less than a large 12×15 master bath. Square footage drives material and labor costs.

Tile choice affects price significantly. Cheap ceramic versus premium marble can triple cost per square foot.

Complexity adds cost. Straight tile patterns cost less than diagonal, herringbone, or intricate designs. Cutting tiles around fixtures and corners takes time.

Preparation work affects cost. If we’re removing old tile, fixing water damage, leveling floors, that’s extra labor before new tile goes down.

Common Tile Installation Questions

Can you tile over existing tile?

Sometimes. If existing tile is solid, well-adhered, and level, we can tile over it. Saves demo cost and time. But if old tile is loose, damaged, or uneven, we remove it. Tiling over bad tile just creates problems later.

They can be but don’t have to be. Some people like matching floor and walls for cohesive look. Others prefer different tiles for visual interest. Both approaches work. It’s personal preference.

You can walk on floor tile after 24 hours usually. Wait 72 hours before showering on newly tiled surfaces. Grout and sealer need time to cure properly. We give you specific timeline based on products used.

Yes. Cutting tile creates fine dust. We use wet saws when possible to reduce dust. We set up plastic barriers to contain mess. We clean daily. But expect some dust in your home during tile work.

Tile Installation Process and Timeline

Here’s what actually happens when we tile your Marion County bathroom.

First we remove old tile if there is any. Demo the floor or walls down to substrate. Inspect for water damage and fix any problems we find. Can’t tile over rot or mold.

Then we prep the surface. Make sure everything is level. Install cement board on walls if needed. Apply waterproofing membrane everywhere. This might take a day or two depending on bathroom size.

Tile installation comes next. We start with layout to make sure cuts and patterns look right. Then we set tile section by section. Floor first usually, then walls. Tile needs 24 hours to set before we can grout.

Grouting happens after tile sets. We apply grout, clean excess off tile face, let it cure. Takes most of a day for average bathroom.

Sealing is final step. We seal grout and stone tile if applicable. Usually wait 72 hours after grouting before sealing.

Total timeline for complete bathroom tile installation runs 4 to 7 days depending on size and complexity. Small powder room on the shorter end. Large master bath with intricate tile work on the longer end.

Is New Tile Right for Your Bathroom?

New tile makes sense when current tile is cracked, loose, or badly stained. These problems don’t improve. They get worse and can cause water damage underneath.

New tile makes sense when you’re doing bathroom remodel anyway. If you’re replacing vanity or shower, adding new tile completes the transformation.

New tile makes sense for outdated bathrooms. Tile from the 80s or 90s makes entire bathrooms look old. Modern tile freshens everything up.

New tile adds resale value. Updated bathrooms sell homes faster in Marion County. Buyers notice tile quality and condition.

Florida Legacy Construction has tiled hundreds of bathrooms across Central Florida. Ocala, Silver Springs Shores, Marion Oaks, The Villages, everywhere. We’re licensed (CBC1268994), insured, and we know what works in Florida’s humid climate.
