Florida Legacy Construction builds ADA-accessible bathrooms throughout Marion County, Sumter County, and the surrounding area. We install grab bars with blocking, convert tubs to zero-threshold showers, and widen doorways. We also raise toilet heights and build fully accessible bathrooms from scratch. Travis Strickland, licensed building contractor CBC1268994, oversees every project.
ADA Bathroom Standards Reference
The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design set the federal minimum requirements for accessible bathrooms. For residential projects, the Fair Housing Act Accessibility Guidelines also apply to multi-unit housing built after 1991. Most single-family accessibility upgrades are voluntary. We build to ADA standards on every project regardless.
Grab Bar Placement and Specifications
Grab bars protect against falls in the most accident-prone area of the home. The 2010 ADA Standards set specific placement heights and load ratings for grab bars in accessible facilities.
| Location | Height from Floor | Length | Load Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toilet side wall (near toilet) | 33 to 36 inches | 42 inches minimum | 250 lbs static |
| Toilet rear wall | 33 to 36 inches | 36 inches minimum | 250 lbs static |
| Shower entry (horizontal) | 33 to 36 inches | 18 inches minimum | 250 lbs static |
| Shower back wall (standing use) | 33 to 36 inches | 36 inches minimum | 250 lbs static |
| Shower back wall (seated use) | 18 inches from floor | 24 inches minimum | 250 lbs static |
| Tub side wall (head end) | 33 to 36 inches | 24 inches minimum | 250 lbs static |
| Tub side wall (foot end) | 33 to 36 inches | 24 inches minimum | 250 lbs static |
Blocking Must Be in the Wall Before Grab Bars Go In
A grab bar screwed only into drywall or tile will pull out under load. Proper grab bar installation requires solid blocking (2-inch by 6-inch lumber minimum) behind the wall surface, anchored into framing. Florida Legacy Construction installs blocking during new construction and shower remodel projects. Adding blocking to an existing wall requires opening the wall, adding the lumber, patching, tiling, and then installing the bar. We document every blocking location with photos for your records.
Accessible Shower and Roll-In Builds
The 2010 ADA Standards define two accessible shower types for residential application.
Transfer-Type Shower (36 x 36 inches)
A transfer shower is 36 inches wide by 36 inches deep. It has a folding bench on the wall opposite the controls. The entry is on the 36-inch side with a low curb or no curb. This type works for users who transfer from a wheelchair to a shower bench. Controls mount 38 to 48 inches from the floor per ADA Section 608.4.
Roll-In Shower (60 x 30 inches minimum)
A roll-in shower is a minimum of 60 inches wide by 30 inches deep. It has no curb. A wheelchair can roll directly into the shower. The floor slopes to a drain at 1:48 maximum grade. We put the linear drain along the entry wall on roll-in showers. This creates the cleanest transition from bathroom floor to shower. Roll-in shower builds often require widening the bathroom doorway to 36 inches as well.
Doorway and Floor Clearance Requirements
ADA-compliant bathroom doorways require a 32-inch clear opening when the door is open 90 degrees. A 36-inch wide door provides that clearance in most frame conditions. Florida Legacy Construction widens doorways in existing bathroom walls when a roll-in shower or full accessible bathroom build requires it.
A 60-inch turning radius requires 60 inches of clear floor space in at least one direction inside the bathroom. Many Marion County guest bathrooms are 5 feet by 8 feet, which provides exactly 60 inches in the long direction. We measure every bathroom before proposing a full accessible build. This confirms the space meets clearance requirements without moving walls.
Toilet Clearance
ADA Standards require 60 inches of clear floor space centered on the toilet for front transfer. Side transfer requires 18 inches from the toilet centerline to the nearest side wall. The toilet seat height in an accessible bathroom runs 17 to 19 inches from floor to seat surface.

Bathroom Remodeling HubFrequently Asked Questions
How much does an accessible bathroom remodel cost in Central Florida?
A grab bar installation with wall blocking runs $400 to $900. A zero-threshold shower conversion runs $9,000 to $16,000. A roll-in shower with door widening runs $12,000 to $22,000. A full accessible bathroom remodel runs $15,000 to $35,000. Florida Legacy Construction provides written estimates at no charge for any scope.
What is the minimum doorway width for ADA accessibility?
The 2010 ADA Standards require a 32-inch clear opening when a door is open 90 degrees. A 36-inch wide door achieves this clearance in most frame configurations. For wheelchair access, a 36-inch door is the standard. Florida Legacy Construction widens existing doorways in bathroom walls as part of accessible bathroom builds. A doorway widening project runs $800 to $2,500 depending on whether the wall is load-bearing.
Where should grab bars be installed in a bathroom?
ADA standards specify grab bars on three surfaces. The toilet side wall needs a 42-inch minimum bar at 33 to 36 inches from the floor. The toilet rear wall needs 36 inches minimum. Shower walls need bars at three heights. Shower bars go at entry height and at standing use height on the back wall. A third bar mounts at 18 inches from the floor for seated use. All grab bars must be rated for a 250-pound static load and anchored into solid blocking or framing.
What is the difference between a transfer shower and a roll-in shower?
A transfer shower is 36 by 36 inches. Users transfer from a wheelchair to a bench inside the shower. A roll-in shower is 60 by 30 inches minimum with no curb. A wheelchair rolls directly into the shower. Roll-in showers cost $3,000 to $6,000 more than transfer showers. The extra cost comes from the larger tile area, linear drain, and door widening work.
Does Florida Legacy Construction build accessible bathrooms for The Villages?
Yes. Accessible bathroom upgrades are a large part of our work in The Villages and Sumter County. The Villages has the highest accessible bathroom remodel demand in Florida. The retirement community population drives that demand. We pull permits in Sumter, Marion, and Lake counties and serve all parts of The Villages.
Can a VA loan pay for accessible bathroom upgrades?
Veterans and active-duty service members can fund accessible bathroom upgrades through VA renovation loans. The upgrades must be part of a broader construction or renovation scope to qualify under VA loan guidelines. Florida Legacy Construction has completed VA-funded projects in Marion and Sumter counties. Contact us to review your project scope.
