Walk-In Shower Installation in Marion County, FL

Walk-In Showers

That Bathtub You Never Use Is Making Your Morning Harder

You climb over the tub edge every single morning. Sometimes twice a day. That 16 inch step gets old fast. Your knees complain. Your back isn’t happy. You grab the towel bar for balance even though you know it’s not a grab bar and could pull right off the wall. Meanwhile, the tub itself? You haven’t taken a bath in three years. Maybe five. It’s just sitting there taking up space while you risk your neck climbing in and out for showers.

Here’s what happened last month in Silver Springs Shores. A homeowner called us after watching her sister slip getting out of the tub up in Ohio. Her sister was fine, just bruised. But that was enough. She wanted that tub gone and a walk-in shower installed before the end of the month. We converted nine bathtubs to walk-in showers in Marion County last month alone. Six in Ocala. Three in Silver Springs Shores. Two more in Marion Oaks this week. Every single homeowner says the same thing afterward. They should have done this years ago.

Florida Legacy Construction specializes in bathroom remodeling throughout Marion County. We’re based locally in Wildwood, licensed (CBC1268994), and we’ve been converting tubs to walk-in showers since 2008. We know exactly how to make your bathroom safer and better looking without the project taking over your life.

Here’s what’s possible when you ditch that tub.

Why Marion County Homeowners Are Choosing Walk-In Showers

The trend started in The Villages about five years back. Homeowners there started ripping out garden tubs and installing big beautiful walk-in showers. The word spread fast. Now everyone in Marion County wants one. The reason is simple. Walk-in showers are easier. Safer. They look more modern. And nobody actually uses bathtubs for baths anymore unless they have young kids. We did a project in Marion Oaks two weeks ago. The homeowner was 68 years old. Plays pickleball four times a week. Golfs twice a week. Completely active and healthy. But that step over the tub edge was getting sketchy. One wet foot. One moment of imbalance. That’s all it takes.

Her new walk-in shower has a 3 inch curb instead of a 16 inch tub wall. Textured tile floor so she doesn’t slip. A handheld shower wand she can adjust. Grab bars that look like regular towel bars. She told us it was the best money she’d spent on her house in 20 years. That’s not unusual. Most people tell us they wish they’d done this sooner. The daily improvement to their routine is bigger than they expected. Showering becomes easier. Safer. Less stressful. You don’t realize how much you worry about slipping until you stop worrying about it.

Florida Legacy Construction handles every detail of tub to shower conversions. The design. The permits. The waterproofing. The tile work. The glass installation. Everything. You get one crew, one point of contact, and a finished shower that works perfectly.

Types of Walk-In Showers We Install

Not all walk-in showers work the same way. You’ve got options depending on your bathroom layout, your budget, and what you’re trying to accomplish.

Curbless Showers (Zero Step)

These have no threshold at all. The bathroom floor runs right into the shower floor. You literally walk in with zero step. The floor slopes slightly toward the drain so water doesn’t escape into your bathroom.

This is what you see in fancy hotels. Very modern. Completely wheelchair accessible if that matters now or might matter later. Installation is more complex because we need to get floor heights and slopes exactly right.

We install these when someone’s doing a complete bathroom remodel and we’re already tearing out the floor anyway. Or when wheelchair access is needed. Cost runs $12,000 to $22,000 in Marion County depending on size and materials.

Low Threshold Showers (Small Curb)

These have a small step, usually 2 to 4 inches tall. Way easier than a bathtub but still keeps water contained inside the shower. This is what we install most often because it works with existing bathroom floors.

A 3 inch step is nothing compared to climbing over a 16 inch tub wall. You get most of the benefits of a curbless shower without the extra complexity and cost. The small curb actually helps contain water better too.

Cost runs $8,000 to $14,000 for a quality custom tile shower with a nice glass door. This is where most Ocala homeowners land. Timeline is about two weeks including permits.

Roll-In Showers (Wheelchair Access)

Built specifically for wheelchair users. Completely level entrance. Usually 5 feet by 5 feet minimum. Has a built-in bench and grab bars positioned for seated use. Everything meets ADA requirements.

We install these when someone already uses a wheelchair or is planning ahead for future needs. The shower is bigger and the requirements are more specific. Cost runs $15,000 to $25,000 in Marion County.

Prefab vs Custom Tile

Prefab units are fiberglass or acrylic bases with matching wall panels. They come in standard sizes. Installation is faster. Cost is lower. They look fine and last a long time.

Custom tile means we build everything from scratch. Any size. Any color. Any pattern. Built-in benches. Storage niches. Accent tile. The finished product looks more upscale and can be designed exactly for your space.

Most people doing a complete bathroom remodel in Marion County choose custom tile. It just looks better and adds more value.

The Tub to Shower Conversion Process

Here’s what actually happens when we convert your bathtub to a walk-in shower. No surprises. No guessing.

First day is demo. We remove your old tub, the surround, all the fixtures. Garden tubs are heavy and awkward getting through doorways but we’ve done this enough times to have it down. We protect your floors and walls with plastic sheeting. Everything comes out carefully.

About 30% of Marion County bathrooms have mold or water damage behind the old surround. Florida humidity does that. When we find it, we fix it before moving forward. We’re not going to build a beautiful new shower over hidden mold. That’s asking for trouble later.

Next comes plumbing work. Shower drains are in different locations than tub drains. Fixtures are at different heights. We relocate everything to work with your new shower. If your house has old galvanized pipes, we usually recommend replacing them while the walls are open. Costs a bit more but prevents leaks and problems down the road.

Then waterproofing. This step is critical in Florida. We use RedGard or Kerdi waterproofing systems on every surface. Walls, floor, curb if there is one. Every corner, every seam, everywhere water might try to sneak through. Good waterproofing prevents mold and makes your shower last 20+ years instead of falling apart in 5.

The shower floor needs to slope toward the drain. Not too steep or it’s weird to stand in. Not too shallow or water pools. We use 1/4 inch per foot slope. Sometimes slightly more for curbless showers. This is where experience matters. We’ve installed hundreds of walk-in showers across Marion County. We know exactly what works.

For custom tile showers, we install floor tile first, then walls, then any accent pieces or built-in niches. This takes 3 to 5 days because tile and grout need proper time to set and cure. Rushing this phase causes problems. Tile that doesn’t adhere right. Grout that cracks. We don’t rush.

After tile is done and cured, we install the glass enclosure. Frameless glass looks the cleanest but costs more. Semi-frameless is a good middle option. Framed enclosures are most budget friendly. All the glass is tempered safety glass that won’t shatter into sharp shards if something breaks it.

Last step is fixtures and finishing touches. Shower head, controls, any handheld wands, grab bars, accessories. We caulk all the edges. Clean everything thoroughly. Test to make sure nothing leaks. Then we walk you through the finished shower and make sure you’re happy with everything.

What Walk-In Showers Actually Cost in Marion County

Let’s talk real numbers. Not vague estimates. Actual costs for walk-in shower installations in Marion County based on projects we completed last year.

Basic Prefab Conversion: $4,500 to $7,500

This gets you a quality fiberglass or acrylic shower base and three-piece surround. New shower fixtures from Moen or Delta. Either a shower curtain or a basic framed glass door. Installation takes about a week. Permit included.

This is a straightforward, functional upgrade. Not fancy but absolutely works well and lasts. Good choice for rental properties or if you just want simple and reliable in your Ocala home.

Mid-Range Custom Tile: $8,000 to $14,000

This is the most popular option. You get custom tile on floor and walls. A frameless or semi-frameless glass enclosure. Quality fixtures. Proper waterproofing. Built-in niche for shampoo and soap. Maybe a bench seat if you want one.

You have choices on tile color, pattern, and size. The finished shower looks like you spent real money on it. Because you did. But it’s worth it. Timeline is 2 to 3 weeks including Marion County permit approval and inspections.

High-End Curbless Installation: $12,000 to $22,000

Full custom everything. Large format tile or natural stone. Linear drain for better water management. Multiple shower heads and body sprays. Built-in tiled bench. Frameless glass walls. Upgraded LED lighting. Maybe heated floors.

This is the resort spa experience in your own bathroom. We just finished one in Silver Springs Shores for $18,500. Completely curbless. Beautiful porcelain tile. Rain head plus handheld wand. Decorative grab bars that look like oil-rubbed bronze towel bars. The homeowners use it multiple times a day because they actually enjoy being in there.

What Affects the Cost

Size matters. A 3×4 foot shower costs less than a 5×6 foot shower. More tile, more labor, more materials.

Tile choice makes a big difference. Basic ceramic tile is cheapest. Large format porcelain costs more. Natural stone is most expensive. The tile itself plus installation time affects total cost.

Fixtures range from $200 to $2,000 depending on brand and how fancy you go. Basic chrome shower head or rainfall fixture with body sprays and handheld wand? Big price difference.

Curbless showers cost more because the floor work is complex. We might need to raise the entire bathroom floor slightly or do extensive drainage work. That’s skilled labor and extra materials.

Hidden Costs You Should Know About

Marion County building permit runs $200 to $400. Required for any shower conversion because plumbing work is involved. We pull the permit and handle inspections. You don’t deal with the county at all.

Mold or water damage remediation adds $1,000 to $2,500 if we find problems during demo. This happens in about 30% of Florida bathrooms. Better to fix it now than let it spread.

Old galvanized pipe replacement adds $800 to $1,500. If your plumbing is 30+ years old, we recommend updating it while walls are open. Prevents leaks and problems later.

Bathroom exhaust fan upgrade costs $300 to $600. Proper ventilation is critical in Florida or you’ll get mold no matter how good your waterproofing is. We size fans correctly for your bathroom and install them properly so they actually work.

Design Options That Make Your Shower Yours

This is the fun part. Picking out all the details that turn a basic shower into YOUR shower.

Tiles Choices Img

Tile Choices

Porcelain tile is what most Marion County homeowners choose. It’s completely waterproof. Easy to clean. Available in every color, size, and pattern imaginable. Large format tiles (12×24 or bigger) create a clean modern look with fewer grout lines to maintain.

Ceramic tile works great too and costs a bit less. Still waterproof, still durable, lots of options.

Natural stone like marble or travertine looks beautiful but needs more attention. You have to seal it regularly to prevent staining and water damage. Some people love the upscale look enough that the maintenance is worth it. Others don’t want to think about it.

For shower floors, we use smaller tiles or textured larger tiles for traction. Slippery shower floors are dangerous. We make sure yours has enough grip to be safe wet or dry.

Glass Enclosures

Glass Enclosures

Frameless glass is all glass with minimal hardware. Very clean and modern. Makes small bathrooms feel bigger. Costs more because the glass is thicker and the hardware is substantial.

Semi-frameless has a frame around the door but minimal framing on fixed panels. Good middle ground between cost and appearance.

Framed enclosures have metal framing all around. Most budget friendly option. Still looks good. Easier to find replacement parts if something breaks years down the road.

All glass is tempered safety glass. If it breaks, it crumbles into small pebbles instead of dangerous shards.

Shower Heads and Controls

Shower Heads and Controls

Rain heads mount in the ceiling or high on the wall. Create a waterfall effect. Some people love them. Others find them annoying and prefer a regular wall-mounted head with better pressure.

Handheld shower wands on a slide bar are incredibly useful. You adjust the height. You direct the spray exactly where you want it. Makes cleaning the shower easier too. We install these on about 70% of walk-in showers in Marion County.

Body sprays are additional spray heads mounted on the walls. Fancy and fun but they use a lot of water and you need good water pressure to make them work right.

Most people go with a regular shower head or rain head plus a handheld wand. Best combination for everyday use.

Built-In Features

Built-In Features

Tiled benches serve double duty. Convenient place to sit while shaving your legs. Critical safety feature if balance becomes an issue as you get older. We tile them to match the rest of the shower. They look intentional and upscale, not like an afterthought.

Shower niches are recessed shelves built into the wall. Perfect for shampoo, soap, razors. Way better than those tension pole caddies that fall over or cheap plastic shelves. We usually build one or two niches into every custom tile shower.

Linear drains are long rectangular drains usually along one wall. Easier to slope properly for curbless showers. They look more modern too. Cost about the same as a traditional center drain.

Safety Features That Don't Look Medical

Here’s the thing about accessibility features. Nobody wants their bathroom to look like a hospital room. Good news is you can add real safety features that look completely normal.

Moen and Delta make grab bars that look exactly like regular towel bars. Same finishes as your faucets. Oil-rubbed bronze, brushed nickel, matte black, whatever. But they’re rated to hold 500 pounds and properly mounted to blocking in the walls. We install these in about 60% of the walk-in showers we build in Marion County. Homeowners get the safety benefit without the visual reminder that they’re aging. They just look like nice bathroom hardware.

Textured tile floors provide traction without looking ugly. We use matte finish tiles, smaller format tiles with more grout lines, or larger tiles with subtle texture molded into the surface. Natural stone has inherent texture. The goal is enough grip to prevent slipping without feeling weird on bare feet.

Handheld shower wands help everyone but they’re especially useful if you ever need to sit while showering. The wand brings the water to you instead of you moving under a fixed head. Functional for everyone. Critical for anyone with limited mobility.

Built-in bench seating is convenient now and might be necessary later. Useful for shaving. Great for foot washing. Essential if sitting becomes easier than standing. We build them the right height (17-19 inches usually) and tile them to match. They just look like part of the design.

Lever-style shower controls are easier to operate than round knobs. Especially helpful if you have arthritis or limited hand strength. They cost about the same as knobs. Small detail that makes a real difference.

Materials That Survive Florida's Climate

Marion County stays humid year-round. We get rain all summer. Heat that never really quits. Your shower materials need to handle moisture without falling apart.

Porcelain and ceramic tile don’t support mold growth. The surface is too hard and non-porous for mold to grab onto. Mold CAN grow on grout if the grout isn’t sealed properly. That’s why we use quality grout and seal it correctly.

Natural stone needs sealing or moisture gets into the stone and causes staining and mold. Without proper sealing and annual resealing, stone showers develop problems in Florida’s climate.

Every Florida bathroom needs a real exhaust fan. Not the cheap builder-grade fan that barely moves air. A fan properly sized for your bathroom square footage. Run it during showers and for 20-30 minutes after. This pulls moisture out before it causes problems.

We size fans based on bathroom size and install them correctly with proper ductwork venting outside. A good bathroom fan costs $300-$600 installed but prevents thousands in mold remediation later.

Waterproofing systems like RedGard or Kerdi go under all the tile. These create a continuous waterproof barrier so water can’t migrate into your walls and cause rot or mold. This step costs money upfront but it’s insurance against expensive problems later.

We don’t skimp on waterproofing. Ever. It’s too important in Florida’s climate.

Questions Ocala Homeowners Ask

Will I be without a shower during the project?

Yes. Your bathroom is torn apart for most of the 2-3 week project. If you only have one bathroom, we work as fast as possible to get you back in there. Most Marion County homes have at least two bathrooms so you can use the other one.

Yes. Any project involving plumbing or electrical work requires a permit. We pull the permit for you. We submit the paperwork. We coordinate the inspection. You don’t have to deal with the county at all. The permit ensures everything is done to code and protects you.

Sometimes. If the tile is still being manufactured, probably yes. If it’s been discontinued for years, we can usually find something very close. Sometimes it makes more sense to redo the entire bathroom so everything matches perfectly. We’ll give you honest advice about what makes sense.

Walk-in showers appeal to buyers in Marion County, especially since many buyers are active adults thinking about aging in place. You’ll probably recoup 60-80% of your cost at resale. But most people do this for themselves, not for future buyers. The daily benefit of a safer, easier shower is worth something even if you never sell.

Yes. Curbless showers require more complex floor work to achieve proper slopes and drainage. They typically cost $3,000 to $8,000 more than a low-threshold shower with similar materials and finishes. You’re paying for that zero-step entrance and the skill required to make it work properly.

Proper floor slope is critical. The floor needs to slope toward the drain at exactly the right angle. Too much and it feels weird. Too little and water pools or escapes. We also use glass panels strategically to create a barrier without a physical curb. The combination of correct slope and smart glass placement keeps water contained. We’ve installed hundreds of curbless showers. This is something we know how to handle.

Timeline for Walk-In Shower Installation

Here’s the realistic timeline for converting your tub to a walk-in shower in Marion County.

Planning and permits take 1-2 weeks. We meet at your house. Measure everything. Discuss what you want. You pick out tile and fixtures. We handle Marion County building permit paperwork and wait for approval. Can’t start demo until the permit is issued.

Demo takes 1-2 days. Removing the old tub, surround, and fixtures. Hauling everything away. Your bathroom looks pretty rough at this stage but that’s normal.

Rough plumbing and waterproofing take 1-2 days. We relocate or update plumbing as needed. Install the shower pan or floor system. Apply waterproofing to all surfaces. This can’t be rushed. Waterproofing needs proper cure time.

Tile installation takes 3-5 days for custom work. Prefab surrounds go in faster, usually one day. Custom tile takes longer because we’re installing floor tile, wall tile, any accent work, then grouting everything. Tile and grout need time to set and cure properly.

Glass and fixtures take 1-2 days. The glass door is custom measured after tile work is done, so there’s usually a few days wait for fabrication. Once it arrives, we install it along with shower heads, controls, and accessories.

Final touches and inspection take 1 day. We caulk edges, clean thoroughly, and call for Marion County inspection. Inspector checks plumbing work and structural items. We do final walkthrough with you.

Total timeline is 2-3 weeks from permit to completion for most projects. Simple prefab conversions on the shorter end. Complex custom tile showers on the longer end.

Things that add time? Finding mold that needs remediation adds a few days. Discovering old plumbing that should be replaced adds time. Custom or special order tile with long lead times delays things. Winter is busy season in Marion County. Summer projects often move faster because contractors aren’t as booked.

We give you a realistic timeline upfront and keep you updated throughout the project. No surprises, no waiting around wondering what’s happening.

Is a Walk-In Shower Right for Your Home?

Walk-in showers make sense if you never use your bathtub. Why keep climbing over it every day for showers when you’re not using it for baths? Replace it with something that actually serves your needs.

They make sense if you’re planning to stay in your Marion County home long-term. The daily safety benefit compounds over years. If you’re in your Ocala home for another 10-20 years, a walk-in shower is one of the smartest investments you can make.

They make sense if you’re doing a bathroom remodel anyway. The bathroom is already torn apart. Permits are already pulled. Adding tub-to-shower conversion to an existing project is more efficient than doing them separately.

You might want to keep your tub if you actually take baths regularly. Some people really do soak in the tub weekly. If that’s you, keep it.

You might want to keep your tub if you have young children who need baths. Walk-in showers don’t work well for bathing small kids. Once the kids are older, then consider converting.

In a one-bathroom home, removing the only tub could affect resale. Some buyers want at least one tub in the house. In a two or three bathroom home, this isn’t an issue at all.

Most Marion County homeowners tell us they wish they’d done this sooner. The improvement to their daily routine was bigger than they expected. Not one has said they regret it.
