| Cement tile (encaustic) | Decorative floors only | $20 to $45 per sq ft | Poor : porous, requires sealing |
Porcelain vs Ceramic in Florida Bathrooms
Porcelain is the stronger choice for most Florida bathroom floors and showers. Porcelain tiles have a water absorption rate below 0.5 percent per the ANSI A137.1 standard. Ceramic tiles absorb 3 to 7 percent moisture. In Florida's humidity, the lower absorption rate of porcelain means less grout and adhesive failure over time.
Ceramic is a fine choice for wall tile in dry areas above the tile line. It costs less than porcelain and performs well on walls where it does not contact standing water.
Slip Resistance Ratings for Wet Bathroom Floors
The DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) measures slip resistance on wet tile surfaces. The ANSI A137.1 standard requires a minimum DCOF of 0.42 for tiles used on interior wet floors such as shower floors and bathroom floors adjacent to showers.
Florida Legacy Construction Only Installs Compliant Floor Tile
We do not install floor tile with a DCOF below 0.42 in wet bathroom applications. We verify the DCOF rating of every floor tile before ordering. This protects you from slip-and-fall liability and ensures the tile meets Florida building code requirements for wet surfaces.
These tile types typically meet the 0.42 DCOF minimum for wet bathroom floors:
- Matte-finish porcelain in 12x12 or smaller formats
- Mosaic tile (2x2 or smaller) with dense grout joint pattern
- Textured or structured-surface porcelain
- Slate and quartzite with natural texture
High-gloss and polished tiles, including polished marble and polished porcelain, typically do not meet the 0.42 DCOF threshold for wet floors. We use these materials on walls and dry floor areas only.
Grout Selection for Florida Bathrooms
Florida's high humidity makes grout selection more important than in drier climates. Grout joint width, grout type, and sealing frequency all affect how long a tile installation lasts in Marion County bathrooms.
Grout Joint Sizing
Smaller grout joints mean fewer maintenance surfaces. Large-format tiles (12x24 or larger) require a minimum 1/16-inch grout joint to accommodate tile warpage per ANSI A108.02. Most Central Florida tile setters use 1/8-inch joints as a standard width. Larger grout joints (3/16 to 1/4 inch) hold grout in place better but require more sealing in Florida's humidity.
Grout Types
- Sanded grout: Use for joints 1/8 inch and wider. Contains sand filler. Standard choice for most floor applications.
- Unsanded grout: Use for joints under 1/8 inch. Smoother texture. Standard for wall tile and glass tile.
- Epoxy grout: Non-porous, does not require sealing, highly stain and moisture resistant. Florida Legacy Construction recommends epoxy grout for shower floors, tub surrounds, and high-humidity areas. Costs $2 to $4 more per square foot installed than cement grout.

Florida-Specific Tile Considerations
Central Florida's climate creates tile installation conditions that differ from northern states. Here are the key factors for Marion County bathroom tile projects.
Temperature Changes and Large-Format Tile
Florida homes run air conditioning year-round. The gap between a cold air-conditioned bathroom and a warm exterior wall causes thermal expansion in tile and substrate. Large-format tiles (18x18 and larger) require movement joints at room perimeters and column transitions. Florida Legacy Construction follows TCNA (Tile Council of North America) guidelines for expansion joint placement.
Natural Stone in Humid Climates
Marble and travertine are porous stones. They absorb moisture and stain easily in wet applications. In Florida bathrooms, we apply a penetrating sealer to stone tile before grouting and recommend annual sealing maintenance. Marble used on shower walls lasts 10 to 20 years with proper care. Without sealing, etching and staining occur within 2 to 5 years in high-humidity showers.
Slab Homes and Radiant Heat
Most Marion County homes sit on concrete slab foundations. Tile on slab requires a proper transition at thresholds to adjacent flooring. Florida Legacy Construction uses schluter or equivalent transition strips at all tile-to-hardwood and tile-to-carpet junctions. This prevents cracking at the tile edge under foot traffic.

Bathroom Remodeling HubFrequently Asked Questions
What is the best bathroom floor tile for Florida homes?
Matte-finish porcelain with a DCOF rating above 0.42 is the best choice for Florida bathroom floors. It resists humidity, does not stain, and provides adequate slip resistance on wet surfaces. Sizes of 12x12, 12x24, and 24x24 work well on Florida slab foundations. Large-format porcelain (24x24 and larger) has fewer grout joints, which reduces maintenance in humid environments.
How much does bathroom tile installation cost in Ocala, FL?
Ceramic tile installation runs $8 to $18 per square foot installed in Marion County. Standard porcelain runs $12 to $28 per square foot. Natural stone runs $18 to $55 per square foot depending on stone type and surface finish. A standard 50-square-foot bathroom floor runs $400 to $1,400 for materials and labor depending on tile grade.
What is DCOF and why does it matter for bathroom tile?
DCOF is short for Dynamic Coefficient of Friction. It measures how much resistance a tile surface provides against slipping when wet. The ANSI A137.1 standard sets a minimum DCOF of 0.42 for interior wet floor tiles. Tiles with DCOF below 0.42 do not meet the wet floor standard and create a slip-and-fall risk in bathrooms. Florida Legacy Construction verifies the DCOF rating of every floor tile before installation.
Should I use epoxy grout or cement grout in my Florida bathroom?
Epoxy grout outperforms cement grout in Florida's high-humidity bathrooms. It does not absorb moisture, does not require sealing, and resists staining from hard water and soap residue. The extra cost runs $2 to $4 per square foot more than cement grout. Florida Legacy Construction uses epoxy grout on shower floors, tub surrounds, and any grout joint that contacts standing water regularly.
Can I use marble tile in a Florida shower?
Yes, with the right preparation and maintenance plan. Marble is porous and absorbs moisture. In a Florida shower, we apply a penetrating sealer before grouting and seal the stone annually after that. We do not use polished marble on shower floors because polished surfaces have a DCOF below the 0.42 wet floor minimum. Honed marble has a matte finish and meets the slip resistance standard.
How long does bathroom tile installation take in Central Florida?
A bathroom floor tile replacement takes 2 to 4 days including prep, installation, and grout curing. A full shower wall and floor tile installation takes 4 to 8 days. Large-format tile takes longer because each tile requires more precise leveling. Grout needs 24 to 48 hours of dry time before water exposure regardless of tile type.
