Kitchen Countertop Options in Central Florida | Florida Legacy Construction
Choosing Kitchen Countertops for Florida Homes
That countertop has seen better days. The laminate is peeling at the seam by the sink. There’s a burn mark from that one time you set a hot pan down without thinking. And honestly? It’s just ugly. You’ve been looking at that outdated pattern for years and you’re done with it.
Your countertops take up a lot of visual real estate in your kitchen. They’re also your primary work surface. If they’re stained, damaged, or just plain wrong for your space, your whole kitchen suffers.
Choosing the right kitchen countertops for your Central Florida home matters more than you might think. The material needs to handle heat. It needs to survive humidity. It needs to look good for decades, not just years. And it needs to fit your budget and how you actually use your kitchen.
I’m Travis Strickland, owner of Florida Legacy Construction.
We’ve installed hundreds of kitchen countertops throughout Marion County – from granite countertops in Ocala to quartz installations in The Villages. We’re based in Wildwood, we’re licensed (CBC1268994), and we help homeowners choose countertop materials that actually work for Florida living. Not what’s trendy. What lasts.
Choosing Kitchen Countertops for Florida Homes
Central Florida is tough on everything. Heat. Humidity. Temperature swings when the AC kicks on. Your kitchen countertops need to handle all of it.
Some materials just don’t hold up here. They crack in the heat. They warp in humidity. They show every water spot and stain within months. (don’t spill the turmeric!) We’ve seen plenty of cheap countertops around Marion County that looked fine when installed but fell apart within a few years.
Durability matters. You’re cooking on these surfaces. Setting hot pans down. Spilling liquids. Cutting vegetables. Your countertops take abuse daily. They need to survive it without looking trashed.
Maintenance is another big consideration. Some homeowners in Ocala don’t mind sealing their granite countertops once a year. Others want zero maintenance which is why quartz countertops have gotten so popular in The Villages and newer developments.
Budget plays a role too. We get it. Countertops are expensive. But here’s the thing, cheap countertops cost you twice. Once when you install them, and again when you replace them too soon. Better to invest in quality material that lasts than save money on something that fails.
And honestly? You’re looking at these countertops every single day. They need to make you happy. The right countertop material balances durability, maintenance, budget, and appearance. Let’s talk about your options.
Quartz Countertops – The Most Popular Choice

Quartz countertops have taken over kitchens in Central Florida. Walk through any newer neighborhood in The Villages and you’ll see quartz everywhere. There’s good reason for that.
Quartz is engineered stone – about 90% natural quartz mixed with resins and pigments. It’s manufactured, not mined, which means consistent patterns and colors. No surprises. You pick a slab and that’s exactly what you get.
The biggest advantage? Quartz is non-porous. Completely. Nothing soaks in. You can spill red wine, tomato sauce, or coffee and just wipe it up. No staining. No sealing required ever. For busy homeowners around Marion County, that’s huge.
Quartz handles heat reasonably well, though you shouldn’t put a screaming hot pan directly on it. Use a trivet and you’re fine. It’s incredibly durable – hard to scratch, hard to chip. The resin makes it slightly flexible, so it doesn’t crack as easily as natural stone.
The variety is incredible. Want the look of marble without the maintenance nightmare? Quartz can do that. Want solid colors that don’t exist in nature? Quartz has you covered. Want subtle patterns? Bold veining? Whatever. Manufacturers make quartz in hundreds of colors and patterns.
We install quartz countertops in Ocala all the time. Homeowners love the low maintenance. Families with kids love that spills don’t become permanent stains. People who travel frequently love coming home to countertops that still look perfect without any upkeep.
The downsides? Quartz costs more than laminate and sometimes more than granite depending on the style you choose. And while it handles heat, it’s not quite as heat-resistant as granite. You still need trivets for hot pans.
But for most Central Florida kitchens, quartz just makes sense. It’s why we probably install more quartz countertops in The Villages than any other material. It works.

Granite Countertops - Still a Top Choice

Granite is natural stone cut right from the earth. Every slab is unique. The patterns, the colors, the veining – no two are exactly alike. If you want a one-of-a-kind kitchen, granite delivers that.
Homeowners choosing granite countertops in Ocala usually love the natural stone appeal. It’s real. It’s been around for millions of years. There’s something satisfying about having actual stone in your kitchen instead of manufactured material.
Granite is incredibly heat resistant. You can put a hot pan directly on it without worry (although that’s not recommended!). It’s hard and durable, one of the hardest natural materials you can use for countertops. Properly cared for, granite lasts forever. We’ve actually seen granite countertops in Marion County homes that are twenty years old and still look brand new.
The variety is wild. Light granite. Dark granite. Granite with subtle patterns. Granite with dramatic veining. Speckled granite. You pick the actual slab you want, so you know exactly what’s going into your kitchen. We have clients look at slabs all the time because pictures don’t do granite justice.
But granite is porous. Not as porous as marble, but it still absorbs liquids if you’re not careful. That means you need to seal it. Usually once a year, sometimes less often depending on the specific granite. It’s not hard, wipe on sealer, let it sit, wipe it off. Takes maybe twenty minutes. But it’s maintenance you have to remember (and many people forget).
If you don’t seal granite, acidic liquids can etch it. Oil can stain it. Red wine can soak in. We’ve fixed plenty of granite countertops around Belleview and Wildwood where homeowners forgot to seal and ended up with permanent stains.
Some people see the sealing requirement as a dealbreaker. Others don’t mind at all, they seal once a year and forget about it. It’s personal preference.
Granite countertops work beautifully in traditional kitchens. They look natural and elegant. They bring warmth and character. For homeowners who appreciate natural materials and don’t mind minimal maintenance, granite is still an excellent choice.
Other Countertop Materials Worth Considering
Solid surface countertops – brands like Corian are seamless and repairable. The material is consistent throughout, so if you scratch it badly, you can sand it out. If you burn it, you can often repair it. Seams are nearly invisible because they’re heat-welded together.
Solid surface comes in lots of colors and patterns. It’s non-porous like quartz. It’s less expensive than stone. And it’s been around forever so we know it lasts.
The downside? It’s not as hard as stone. You can scratch it more easily. You can melt it with a very hot pan. It doesn’t have the high-end look of stone; it’s clearly manufactured. But for budget-conscious homeowners in Marion County who want something durable and low-maintenance, solid surface works fine.
Butcher block countertops bring warmth and character to a kitchen. Real wood, usually maple or walnut sealed for kitchen use. It feels completely different from stone. Warmer. More organic. Great for food prep because it’s easier on your knives.
We install butcher block islands sometimes while using stone for the perimeter counters. Nice contrast. Very farmhouse kitchen.
But wood requires maintenance. You need to oil it regularly to keep it sealed. Water can damage it if left standing. Hot pans will burn it. It scratches and dents though some people like that lived-in patina. Wood just isn’t as durable as stone in a busy kitchen.
Concrete countertops give you a custom, industrial look. We can pour them in place or prefab them. You can add color. You can embed things in the concrete. Very unique.
But concrete needs sealing like granite, maybe more often. It can crack. It can stain. And honestly, it’s expensive for what you get. We don’t install many concrete countertops in Central Florida because the cost just doesn’t match the durability.
Quartzite is natural stone like granite but even harder. It’s gorgeous and often looks like marble with dramatic veining. Very high-end look. Heat resistant. Durable.
But quartzite is expensive. And like granite, it needs sealing. It’s harder to find in the patterns you want. We install quartzite occasionally for homeowners who want something really special and are willing to pay for it.
Marble is the most beautiful natural stone. Those soft gray veins on white background? Nothing looks like marble. It’s elegant and classic and has been used in fancy homes for centuries.
It’s also high maintenance. Marble is soft so it scratches easily. It’s porous and stains easily. Acidic things like lemon juice etch it immediately, leaving dull spots. You need to seal it frequently and even then, it’s going to show wear.
We install marble sometimes as a section for baking. Pastry chefs love the cool surface. But for main kitchen countertops in busy Central Florida homes? We usually talk people out of marble unless they really understand what they’re signing up for.
What to Avoid in Florida Kitchens
Laminate countertops are cheap. That’s their main advantage. Lots of colors and patterns available. Easy to install.
But laminate doesn’t last in Florida. The moisture gets underneath and causes swelling. Seams fail. Burns can’t be repaired. Deep scratches go through to the substrate and look terrible. And honestly, laminate just looks cheap.
If your budget is super tight, okay, laminate might be your only option. But if you can possibly afford to upgrade to quartz or granite, do it. You’ll be happier for the next twenty years.
Tile countertops used to be popular. Not anymore. The grout lines stain. They’re hard to clean. Food gets stuck in them. The tiles can crack. And the look is just dated now.
We have to tear out tile countertops regularly when remodeling kitchens around Ocala and The Villages. Nobody’s installing new tile counters. There are better options at every price point.
Countertop Edges and Finishes
The edge profile changes how your countertops look. A simple eased edge is slightly rounded; clean and modern. A beveled edge has an angled cut and adds a little detail without going overboard.
Ogee edges are more decorative with curves and details, traditional and elegant. Bullnose edges are fully rounded…soft and approachable. Waterfall edges run down the side of an island or cabinet end and are very contemporary and dramatic.
Your edge choice affects price. Simple edges cost less. Fancy edges cost more because they require more fabrication work. But the edge makes a difference in the overall look.
Finishes matter too. Polished stone is shiny and reflective and shows the colors and patterns most dramatically. Honed finish is matte, softer look, hides fingerprints better. Leathered finish has subtle texture and is popular on darker granites.
Most homeowners in The Villages and Marion County choose polished quartz or granite. It’s classic. It’s easy to clean. It looks high-end. But honed and leathered finishes have their place too, especially in certain design styles.
The Countertop Installation Process
Here’s how getting new kitchen countertops actually works.
First, we template your kitchen. After your cabinets are installed, we come measure everything precisely. We use digital templating to get exact measurements including any out-of-square walls or irregular spaces. This ensures your countertops fit perfectly.
Then we order your material. For stone countertops, you’ve already picked your slab. For quartz, you’ve chosen your color. The fabricator cuts your countertops to match our template. They create the edge profile you selected. They cut holes for your sink and cooktop.
Fabrication takes about two weeks usually. Sometimes less, sometimes more depending on the material and complexity.
Installation day comes and we remove your old countertops if needed. We check that cabinets are level because they need to be for countertops to sit right. We bring in your new countertops and set them carefully.
For stone, seams are inevitable in larger kitchens. We plan seam placement carefully so they’re in the least visible spots. Good fabricators make seams nearly invisible. We use epoxy color-matched to your stone.
We install your sink. We hook up your cooktop if you have one. We seal everything. We clean up completely. And we show you how to care for your new countertops.
The whole installation usually takes one day (there are exceptions). You’re without a kitchen sink for that day, but you have beautiful new countertops by evening.
Travis personally oversees every countertop installation in Marion County to make sure everything goes smoothly. We’ve done this hundreds of times. We know how to avoid problems and fix the unexpected issues that sometimes pop up.
Caring for Your Countertops by Material
Quartz needs almost nothing. Wipe it with soap and water. That’s it. Don’t use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Just normal cleaning. It’ll look great for decades.
Granite needs sealing once a year usually. Some granites need it more often, some less. You can test if your granite needs sealing by putting water drops on it. If they soak in within a few minutes, seal it. If they bead up, you’re good.
Cleaning granite is easy, soap and water. Don’t use acidic cleaners. Don’t use abrasive scrubbers. Wipe up spills reasonably quickly. Seal it annually. Done.
Solid surface needs normal cleaning. If you scratch it badly, call us and we can sand it out. If you burn it, we can sometimes repair that too.
Butcher block needs oiling every few months. Use food-safe mineral oil. Wipe it on, let it soak in, wipe off excess. This keeps the wood sealed and protected. Sand out deep scratches if needed.
All countertops benefit from using cutting boards instead of cutting directly on the surface. Use trivets under hot pans. Wipe up spills instead of letting them sit for hours. Basic care keeps any countertop looking good.
