Custom Kitchen Cabinets in Marion County, FL | Florida Legacy Construction
You open that cabinet door for the hundredth time today. It sticks. Again. The hinge is loose, and the door hangs crooked. Inside, you’re playing Tetris with your pots and pans because nothing fits right. Half your dishes are shoved in the back where you can’t reach them without pulling everything out first.
And those cabinets? They’re ugly. You’ve hated them since you moved in.
Here’s the thing about kitchen cabinets – they take up more visual space than anything else in your kitchen. If your cabinets look cheap or outdated, your whole kitchen feels that way. Doesn’t matter how nice your countertops are.
But custom kitchen cabinets change all of that. Not the cookie-cutter boxes from the big box stores. Real custom cabinets designed specifically for your kitchen and how you actually cook. That’s what we build at Florida Legacy Construction. I’m Travis Strickland, and we’ve been creating custom cabinets for Marion County homeowners for over a decade. We’re based right here in Wildwood, we’re licensed (CBC1268994), and we build cabinets that’ll still look great and work perfectly twenty years from now.
Why Custom Kitchen Cabinets Actually Matter
Walk into any home improvement store and you’ll see rows of kitchen cabinets. They’re cheap. They’re available today. And they’re all the same standard sizes.
That’s the problem.
Your kitchen isn’t standard. That weird corner by the window? The space between your stove and the wall that’s just a little too narrow? The ceiling height that’s different from every other house on your street? Stock cabinets don’t care about any of that. You get gaps. Wasted space. Cabinets that almost fit but not quite.
Stock cabinets are made from particleboard – basically compressed sawdust held together with glue. They work fine for a few years. Then the Florida humidity gets to them. Doors start sagging. Hinges pull out. Drawer fronts separate from drawer boxes. We’ve torn out plenty of ten-year-old stock cabinets from homes around Ocala that are literally falling apart.
Semi-custom cabinets are better. You get more size options and better construction. But you’re still choosing from a catalog instead of designing exactly what you need.
Custom cabinets are built for your specific kitchen. Every inch is planned. Every cabinet does exactly what you need it to do. The construction is solid – real plywood boxes, not particleboard. Dovetail drawer joints. Soft-close hinges that’ll last decades. The kind of quality that makes sense in Central Florida’s climate where humidity and temperature swings are just part of life.
Yeah, custom costs more upfront. But you’re not replacing them in ten years. You’re not dealing with sticky doors and broken hardware. And your kitchen actually looks like someone designed it on purpose instead of just filling space with whatever fit.
Kitchen Cabinet Styles We Build

Shaker cabinets are what most of our Marion County clients choose. Clean lines. Simple frame-and-panel doors. They work in modern kitchens. They work in traditional kitchens. They just work. Shaker cabinets don’t scream for attention, which is exactly why they’ve been popular for a hundred years and will be popular for another hundred.
We build a lot of shaker cabinets in Ocala. White shaker cabinets for people who want bright and clean. Gray shaker cabinets for something more contemporary. Natural wood stains for warmth. The style is simple enough that it won’t feel dated, but detailed enough that it doesn’t look cheap.
Flat-panel cabinets – sometimes called slab cabinets – give you that sleek, modern look. No raised panels. No decorative details. Just smooth cabinet doors. If you’re going for a contemporary kitchen, flat-panel cabinets deliver. They’re popular in newer developments around The Villages and in homes where people want that minimalist, uncluttered feel.
The clean lines make your kitchen feel larger. Everything looks intentional and designed. Flat-panel works especially well with handleless cabinets or simple bar pulls. Very European. Very modern.
Raised-panel cabinets bring traditional elegance. The center panel is, well, raised – giving you depth and shadow lines that catch the light. These cabinets have more detail and craftsmanship showing. If your home has traditional architecture or you just prefer classic design, raised-panel cabinets fit perfectly.
We see these a lot in older neighborhoods around Ocala where homeowners want their kitchen to match the character of their home. Raised-panel cabinets in cherry or maple with a rich stain – that’s timeless.
Glass-front cabinets let you show off your nice dishes or collection of coffee mugs. Upper cabinets with glass inserts break up all that solid cabinetry and add visual interest. You don’t want all glass-front cabinets – you need places to hide the mismatched plastic containers. But a few glass doors mixed in? That’s a nice touch.
Some of our Central Florida clients like open shelving too. No cabinet doors at all – just shelves displaying dishes, cookbooks, or decorative items. Open shelving feels casual and approachable. It’s also cheaper than cabinets with doors. But you have to keep those shelves looking good because everyone can see them.
The right cabinet style depends on your home, your taste, and how you live. We’ll show you examples and help you figure out what makes sense. Not what’s trendy. What works for you.
Cabinet Materials and How They're Built
The box matters more than the door. Seriously.
You can have the prettiest cabinet doors ever made, but if the box they’re attached to is garbage, you’ve got garbage cabinets. We build cabinet boxes from plywood. Three-quarter-inch plywood sides, backs, tops, and bottoms. Plywood doesn’t fall apart when it gets humid. It holds screws. It lasts.
Particleboard boxes are cheaper. They’re also what fails first. We’ve seen it over and over in Marion County – cabinet doors are fine, but the box is sagging and the hinges are pulling loose because particleboard just doesn’t hold up.
For cabinet doors and drawer fronts, you’ve got wood species options. Maple is hard, durable, and takes paint beautifully. Most of our white or gray painted cabinets are maple. Oak has that prominent grain pattern – very traditional, very durable. Cherry is gorgeous with a natural finish and it darkens over time to a rich reddness.
Hickory shows a lot of character with varied grain and color. It’s hard as rocks. And there’s always good old pine for that rustic farmhouse look, though it dents easier than the hardwoods.
Painted cabinets are incredibly popular right now in Central Florida. White kitchens. Gray kitchens. Navy blue islands. Paint hides the wood grain completely and gives you unlimited color options. The finish matters – we use professional cabinet paint with a durable topcoat that won’t chip or yellow.
Stained cabinets show off the natural wood grain. You can go light and natural or dark and rich. Stain gives you warmth and character. It also hides fingerprints better than painted cabinets, which is nice if you have kids.
Every single one of our cabinets comes with soft-close hinges and drawer glides. Standard. You know that satisfying feeling when a drawer closes smoothly and quietly? That’s what soft-close hardware does. No slamming. No pinched fingers. No broken dishes because someone slammed a cabinet door.
The hardware might seem like a small thing, but cheap hinges and drawer slides fail. Good hardware lasts for decades. We use quality stuff because we don’t want to come back and replace it in five years.
Custom Storage Solutions That Actually Work

This is where custom cabinets really shine. Stock cabinets give you boxes with shelves. Custom cabinets give you solutions.
Got a lot of pots and pans? We build deep drawers instead of lower cabinets. Pull out a drawer and everything is right there visible and accessible. No digging through a dark cabinet on your hands and knees. Deep drawers for pots, pans, mixing bowls – it’s a game changer.
Pull-out shelving works great in base cabinets too. The whole shelf slides out toward you. No more lost cans of soup in the back. No more forgetting what you have because you can’t see it. Everything’s accessible.
Corner cabinets are usually wasted space. Stick a lazy Susan in there and suddenly you can use that corner. Spinning shelves that bring everything within reach. We install a lot of these in Ocala kitchens because corner space is too valuable to waste.
Spice pull-outs are narrow cabinets – maybe six inches wide – that pull out to reveal multiple shelves for spices, oils, and vinegars. Everything visible. Everything organized. These fit in those awkward narrow spaces between your stove and the wall.
You have a stand mixer or food processor that’s too heavy to move around? We can design an appliance garage with a lift-up door. Or a deep drawer with a lift mechanism that brings your mixer up to counter height. Use it, push it back down, close the drawer. Your counters stay clear.
Trash and recycling pull-outs keep garbage cans hidden but easy to access. One cabinet, multiple bins, all on smooth glides. Much better than a trash can sitting in the corner of your kitchen.
Custom pantry solutions make food storage actually work. Pull-out pantry cabinets. Built-in spice racks on the inside of doors. Dedicated shelves for specific items at specific heights. When we design your cabinets, we ask how you cook and what you need to store. Then we build cabinets that solve those specific problems.
The Custom Cabinet Process
Here’s how this works when you decide you want custom cabinets.
First, I come to your house. We measure your kitchen carefully. We talk about what’s frustrating you now. We discuss how you cook, what you need to store, and what you want your kitchen to feel like. This isn’t a sales pitch. It’s a conversation about your kitchen and what’s possible.
Then we design your cabinets. We plan every box, every drawer, every door. We figure out heights and depths that work for you specifically. We show you door styles and finish options. You pick what you like. We adjust the design until it’s exactly right.
Material selection happens next. You’ll look at wood samples with different stains. Paint color samples. Hardware options for handles and pulls. We guide you through this because there are way too many choices and not all of them are good. But you make the final decisions on style and finish.
Manufacturing takes time. Custom cabinets aren’t sitting in a warehouse. They’re built specifically for your kitchen. Usually takes several weeks from order to delivery. We give you a realistic timeline upfront.
Installation day comes and we turn your kitchen into a construction zone temporarily. We remove old cabinets if needed. We make sure walls are level and plumb – because walls never are naturally. We install your new custom cabinets carefully, making sure everything is level, square, and secure.
Doors get adjusted so they close perfectly. Drawers get adjusted so they glide smoothly. We install all the hardware. We clean up completely. And then we walk through everything with you to make sure you’re happy.
Travis personally oversees this entire process for every cabinet project in Marion County. You’re not working with some random crew who disappears after installation. You’re working with us from start to finish.
Taking Care of Your Custom Cabinets
Good custom cabinets last decades, but you need to take care of them.
Clean them regularly with a damp cloth and mild soap. That’s it. Don’t use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Don’t use all-purpose sprays that build up over time. Just wipe them down.
Florida humidity is tough on everything. Your cabinets handle it fine because they’re built right, but you still want to use your exhaust fan when cooking. Keep moisture levels reasonable. Don’t let standing water sit on cabinet surfaces.
If you have painted cabinets, they might need touching up eventually. High-traffic areas can show wear. We can help with touch-up paint if needed.
Stained cabinets might need reconditioning after many years. A light cleaning and fresh coat of finish brings them back to life. Not for decades usually, but it’s an option.
The soft-close hinges and drawer glides we install don’t need maintenance. They just work. If something does go wrong – and it rarely does – we can adjust or replace hardware easily.
Your custom cabinets come with a warranty on materials and workmanship. We stand behind what we build. If there’s a problem, we fix it.
